The season is slowly winding down, and with it, the Premier League relegation battle is heating up. As of this week, most teams only have 3 more games left to play. Which teams can ultimately beat the drop? Which teams will be playing in the championship next season? Well, lets look at the bottom five teams, and take a look at their odds of staying up, starting from 16th place, West Brom.
16. West Bromwich Albion
West Brom is sitting at 16th place with 33 points and a -13 goal difference. They are currently one point above Norwich City, with 4 games left in the season. Their current form is decent, with 1 win, 2 draws, and 2 losses. Their next game is against Manchester City at the Etihad stadium, and their remaining opponents are West Ham United, Arsenal, Sunderland, and Stoke City. Overall, I think West Bromwich Albion is safe, they have 5 games to play with 33 points in hand. I expect West Brom to be able to win 1, draw 1, and lose 2, taking 4 points from their remaining fixtures, and finishing with 37 points.
17. Norwich City
Norwich City is currently sitting at 17th place, with 32 points and a -28 goal difference. They are currently one point behind West Bromwich Albion, with 3 games left in the season. Their remaining three fixtures are brutal, and honestly, I do not expect them to be able to pick up a even a single point against Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal. Overall, the odds of Norwich City staying up is almost non-existent. Their remaining schedule is horrific, and the teams below them are surging. I predict that Norwich would probably finish with 32 points, taking 0 points from their last three fixtures.
18. Fulham FC
Fulham FC is a curious case (full disclosure: I’m a Fulham supporter). They were playing very poorly, at one point they had a 9 game losing streak. However, since they sacked their previous manager and brought in Felix Magath, the team is showing surprising signs of life, and could potentially survive the relegation battle for another season in the Premier League. I’m predicting 2 wins and 1 loss, allowing Fulham to finish with 36 points.
18. Cardiff City
Cardiff City is sitting at 18th place with 30 points and -34 goal differential. They are a slumping team with poor recent form. They have no wins, two draws, and three losses in their last five games. Their last three fixtures pits them against Sunderland, Newcastle, and Chelsea. Their recent form is middling, and I cannot picture them taking enough points to make it to safety. I predict 1 win and 1 draw in their last three fixtures, finishing with 34 points.
Sunderland has performed admirably in the last few games. They held Manchester City to a 2 – 2 draw, and surprised everyone by beating Chelsea 2 – 1. They have 4 fixtures left, with two critical must win games against fellow relegation candidates Cardiff and West Brom. I cannot really figure out why they were able to win against Chelsea and Sunderland. They looked overmatched, and were out possessed and out shot in both games. I’m predicting that they probably just got lucky, and that they would have difficulty continuing their success. I predict 1 win and 1 draw in their last 4 fixtures, finishing with 33 points.
